SANILAC TWP. — A fast right turn caused a 13-year-old girl to lose control of the all-terrain vehicle she was driving on Harneck Road near Hulverson Road Friday morning.

According to an investigator from the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, at about 9:15 a.m. the unidentified female rider slid sideways on the gravel road as she attempted to turn into a paved driveway. Her lateral skid was abruptly halted when her wheels hit the pavement causing the Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV to roll over into a ditch pinning the operator beneath it.

Another rider of an ATV, a 13-yearold male, following the girl stopped and attempted to lift the four-wheeler off of her but was unsuccessful.

Even with the assistance of two local residents, Leonard and Bonnie Beulla, who appeared at the scene to help, the weight of the machine proved too much.

The couple was, however, able to lift the ATV enough to enable the girl to breathe, as the boy went off to call 911.

First on the scene was Deputy Sheriff Ken Crase, who rendered aid to the girl until enough help arrived to safely lift the ATV.

The girl, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the mishap, was transported to McKenzie Hospital by Sanilac EMS complaining of difficulty breathing.

According to Undersherrif Brad Roff, she was treated and released the same day.

Roff also stated, “The ATV was approved and OK for trail riding which our side-roads are classified as under the County ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) ordinance.”

Speaking for Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki, Roff said, “I think the most important points that the sheriff wants to make to the public after this accident is that children under 16 years of age must have a safety certificate from a state approved course, wear a helmet, must not exceed 25 miles per hour, and ride in the presence of a licensed driver.”

Port Sanilac Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene.
