Two county wrestlers place at State Meet

Photos by Yolanda Hayward DETROIT – Sanilac County sent five wrestlers to the MHSAA Individual State Finals this past weekend, and two came back with medals.

Croswell-Lexington’s Paul Scaramuzzino, competing in Division 2, and Marlette’s Andrew Webster, in Division 4, claimed fifth and sixth place finishes.

Scaramuzzino, a junior wrestling at 152 pounds, opened with a win over Bobby Copley of New Boston Huron (TF, 5:27, 17-2). He met top-seeded Alec Rees (48-0) of Sparta in the next round and lost on a, 8-2, decision. Rees went on to win the state title.

Dropping down in the consolation bracket, Scaramuzzino clinched a medal by defeating Adam Brenner of New Boston Huron, 4-1. He followed with a, 7-3, decision against Tyson Ford of Mattawan.

In a chance to battle for the third place medal, Scaramuzzino lost to Corbin Choummanivong of Holland. He then bounced back to earn the fifth place medal by edging Clio’s Alex Moore and finishing his season with a 54-5 record.

In Division 4, 112 pounds, Webster scored a, 13-6, decision over Connor Fitzpatrick of Jackson Lumen Christi. It was Webster’s first win at State after qualifying the last two seasons.

In the quarterfinals, the Raiders’ four-year standout, lost in overtime, 7-5, to Bangor’s Daniel Villalobos. Webster recharged in the consolation bracket with wins over Alexander Bastien of Pittsford (11-6) and Zach Ouilette of Oscoda (6-2).

A chance for third place eluded him in the next match, getting pinned in :55 seconds against Zachary Goss of Vassar, who went on to take 3rd.

Webster then finished his day with a, 9-7, loss to Villalobos and settled for a sixth place medal and an overall record of 30-11.

Three other county wrestlers also competed at the individual finals, but all three missed out on a medal.

Cros-Lex’s Chris Lilly (51-8), a sophomore, went 1-2 at 130 pounds in D2. He had a Sudden Victory, 5-3, in his opener against a tough freshman, Doak Dean of Lowell. Lilly then lost his next matches – a, 8-3, decision to Peter Deaton (39-3) of Mattawan and a, 10-5, decision to Tanner Miller (50-6) of Mason. Deaton went on to claim a fifth place medal while Miller finished seventh.

Two Sandusky Redskins wrestlers, both juniors, made their first trip to the State Finals.

At 145 pounds, Cody Hartz (43-10) lost to Braxton Seida (finished 5th overall) of Carson City on a major decision, 14-5, in the opening round. His tournament ended in the next round on a tough, 4-3, loss to Charlevoix’s Jeremy Chemauckas.

In the meantime, the Redskins’ Jacob Horst, at 152, had a mighty opening task against Hesperia’s Gerrit Yates, the defending State champion in the weight class. He lost to Yates, who went on to place third, on a tech. fall, 16-1.

In the consolation bracket, Horst met Ryan Lakatos of Sand Creek and dropped, a 5-2, decision and finished his season with a 37-16 record.
