CROSWELL — The Croswell- Lexington Board of Education is backing the efforts of Athletic Director Brett Vaughn to upgrade the district’s sports scoreboards.

“Particularly the baseball and softball scoreboards are in desperate need of updating,” said Vaughn.

“We also need to replace the football scoreboard. The football scoreboards we are looking at run between $75,000 and $100,000. When you include the baseball and softball scoreboards, the package is about $140,000 for all three over five years at zero percent interest.”

Vaughn stressed the funds would be generated from private donations.

“The district’s fundraising efforts have hardly begun, but the initial response has been great,” said Vaughn. “It’s early and we haven’t started fully promoting it yet.”

Plans call for providing advertising space especially on the football scoreboard.

“We are seeking to obtain four sponsors who will contract to contribute $4,000 per year for five years, four sponsors at $2,000 per year for five years, and a greater number of sponsors to contribute $500 a year for five years,” said Vaughn. “We already have one committed at the $4,000 level, one committed at the $2,000 level, and five at the $500 level.”

The money raised over and above the cost of the scoreboards will be used to fund sports in the district.

“It’s a way of raising much of the money needed for our athletic programs while likely reducing the amount of solicitations for funds the businesses and people of this community are subjected to every year,” said Vaughn.

“Great new scoreboards, interchangeable control panels, needed funding for our overall sports program, and likely less solicitations, make this a great idea,” said Vaughn. “It accomplishes all of our objectives without using tax money to pay for it.”

Vaughn said that he is shopping around with several companies to see what they can do. No final purchase decisions have yet been made.
